01 Consumer Trend - CULINARY CONVENIENCE: Intelligent brands deliver nutritious food choices directly to your doorstep.
Choosing healthy food in our busy lives is a crucial task, and according to the 2023 Edelman Barometer report, three-fourths of consumers worldwide rely on the food industry for guidelines on health issues. However, with processed foods occupying 70% of supermarket products, finding healthy options can be challenging. Smart brands are utilizing innovative technology and ideas to help consumers easily access nutritious food.
1) Samsung, AI powered meal Planning
Samsung's 'Samsung Food' platform, unveiled by Samsung Electronics, is based on artificial intelligence (AI) and supports every step of the meal process, from recipe searches, meal planning, and ingredient management to cooking and content sharing. The most intriguing feature is the 'customization function,' which provides optimal recipes based on the user's food preferences, nutritional balance, meal type, and cooking methods. It also considers the user's daily situation, offering cooking instructions and reflecting the ingredient preferences and meal plans of family members. This feature is integrated with all Samsung products, from bespoke cooking appliances to refrigerators. It enables users to easily implement innovative personalized meals by setting cooking temperatures and times according to the chosen recipe and previewing ingredients in advance. This platform is emerging as an innovative and personalized meal solution.
2) Doordash
The majority of public school lunches in the United States are vastly different from those in Korea. Many students avoid the low-nutrition, unappetizing foods like hard bread, pre-packaged frozen meals, and high-sugar juices, often choosing to bring their own lunch from home.
DoorDash understands these challenges and has launched a campaign called "Back To School, bento inspired lunches" in collaboration with actress Jessica Biel. The goal of this campaign is to deliver nutritious and delicious lunchbox-style meals to students during lunch hours.
These lunches, prepared with a focus on convenience and menus that children love, considering students who have to leave early for school and busy parents, prioritize both convenience and nutrition. They aim to provide students and families with fresh and tasty food, alleviating the pressure on parents.

02 Automotive Weekly A - Tesla, Toyota and Lexus
panels at once, eliminating the need for over 5,000 welds in the previous process. Consequently, the cost was reduced by 40%, generating profits of over $9,574 per vehicle. This innovation not only streamlined the existing process but also reduced operating time and the number of components significantly. (Comparison of net profits per vehicle: Hyundai - $927, GM - $2,150, Toyota - $1,197)
Toyota, criticized for the slow pace of transitioning to electric vehicles, plans to adopt a similar production process. This approach appears to be an advancement of Tesla's Gigacasting technology. It involves casting large parts of the vehicle separately, dividing them into front, middle, and rear sections. This reduces the number of parts, and components like fillers, doors, and roofs are assembled separately later, minimizing interference. One major goal of this production process change is to reduce human intervention and automate half of the manufacturing process. To achieve this, small robots and logistics robots will be actively utilized. Small robots will replace areas traditionally handled by human workers, such as seat assembly, to increase efficiency. Logistics robots will move small parts, aiding in part movement without conveyor belts. Vehicles assembled using internal factory technology and vehicle interior sensors will autonomously move to various build stations, creating a system where they are completed. This modular body structure is expected to be implemented by no later than 2026.

Around 2026, Lexus plans to introduce the next generation of electric vehicles (EVs) featuring a new modular body and software platform. Infusing Lexus' unique spirit into the latest concepts like AE86, RZ Sports, and Electrified Sport, they aim to offer vehicles that are thrilling to drive and embody a deep love for cars even in the battery-powered EV era. Their upcoming lineup includes the LM luxury van, LBX compact crossover, GX large SUV, and the 3-row SUV, TX.
Similar to Ford's approach with the Bronco, Lexus is launching a customer experience program. They will provide opportunities to experience off-roading using ROVs (Recreational Off-Highway Vehicles) and side-by-side concept vehicles. This initiative showcases their differentiation from other brands through hydrogen-powered engines. While they might be a step behind, their efforts to innovate are evident, showing a commitment to stay ahead of the curve. |

02 Automotive Weekly B - The rising popularity of electric vehicles, China's dominance in the screen market, and Ford's digital license plates.
1) According to Cox Automotive, electric car sales in the United States increased by 80% compared to the previous year. Electric vehicles now account for 8% of the automobile market share, and it is expected that over a million electric cars will be sold this year. The rapid growth in sales can be attributed to high inventories, prices about 19% lower than last year, and the expansion of electric car leasing. However, the sad news is that Tesla still dominates the electric car market, leaving other manufacturers to compete for small market shares.
2) China is now leading the automotive display market as well. According to the Omdia technology research group, Chinese car companies occupy 45% of the display market, a significant increase from 7% ten years ago. Chinese suppliers hold a 55% market share in LCD displays and an 18% share in OLED screens. Omdia's analysis suggests that China is showing remarkable capabilities in terms of cost and capacity, indicating that it will continue to lead the screen market in the future.
3) Ford has introduced digital license plates for the first time in the United States. Collaborating with the digital license plate manufacturer Reviver, these plates are available for purchase at 300 Ford dealerships in Arizona, California, and Michigan. Currently limited to these three states, it is expected that they will be available in more locations pending federal approval. Digital license plates offer advantages such as displaying GPS location information and allowing users to customize the displayed information. However, they come at a price; the battery-operated version costs $215 annually, making it a not-so-affordable option at $20 per month. |
